  1. The United States is a vast country, with diversified land,
  2. people, industries and views.  Although having a short history,
  3. its contributions to the world have been impressive and
  4. significant from the beginning. John Cabot became the first
  5. European to explore the region that would become the United
  6. States in 1497 and the first settlement was established by the
  7. Spanish in 1565 at St. Augustine, Florida.  In 1609 the first
  8. English settlement was established at Jamestown on the Virginia
  9. coast, only to mysteriously vanish a few years later.  By 1620
  10. the Puritan separatists from the Church of England, known as the
  11. Plymouth Pilgrims settled Cape Cod on November 19 and the Bay
  12. Colony was founded shortly thereafter.  By the early 18th
  13. century, the original thirteen colonies were fully established
  14. under British protection and control. From 1764 to 1774 a series
  15. of taxes, including the Sugar Act, Stamp Act, Townshend Act and
  16. the Intolerable Acts lead the colonist to revolt.  On April 18,
  17. 1775 the first battle of the American Revolutionary War was
  18. fought at Lexington and Concord.  The Revolution continued until
  19. 1781 when British General Cornwallis surrendered on October 19. 
  20. A confederation of States existed from then until 1787 when the
  21. Constitution of the United States was finished and signed. 
  22. George Washington was elected the first President on February 4,
  23. 1789.  In 1803 the United States purchased the Louisiana
  24. Territories from France for $11 million dollars, resulting in a
  25. major land acquisition that added much of the American midwest
  26. and west.  On December 2, 1823 the Monroe Doctrine was passed by
  27. Congress and stipulated the U.S.'s intentions of upholding North
  28. American sovereignty over the region.  By 1861 seven southern
  29. states of the union set-up the Confederate States of America on
  30. February 8.  The American Civil War began on April 12th with the
  31. Confederate attack against Fort Sumter in Charleston, South
  32. Carolina.  The Civil War was one of the bloodiest wars in
  33. history, resulting in millions of deaths.  The War ended on April
  34. 9, 1865, with a re-unified nation and the abolition of slavery. 
  35. During the later half of the century, industrialization took hold
  36. and started to build one of the largest industrial empires in the
  37. world.  In 1869 the first transcontinental railroad was
  38. completed, opening up the American west and on May 24, 1883 the
  39. Brooklyn Bridge was completed, proving that a large scale
  40. suspension bridge could be built from modern material.  By 1903
  41. the United States and Colombia agreed to build the Panama Canal
  42. and the first powered airplane was flown by Wilbur and Orville
  43. Wright.  The U.S. was drawn into World War I by growing German
  44. militarism and aggressiveness on the high seas.  On April 6, 1917
  45. the United States declared War on Germany and by July 1918 over
  46. one million Americans troops were in Europe.  The War was over by
  47. November 11, 1918.  After World War I the U.S. saw a surging
  48. economy and industrial expansion that was halted on October 29,
  49. 1929 when the New York Stock Exchange crashed, signaling the
  50. beginning of the Great Depression.  By 1939 German domination of
  51. Europe began to affect U.S. domestic and international policy. 
  52. The U.S. contributed aid and ammunition to Britain and German
  53. submarines began to sink U.S. merchant ships.  On December 7,
  54. 1941 the Japanese Navy attacked the U.S. base at Pearl Harbor in
  55. Hawaii and ushered the U.S. into World War II.  By September 9,
  56. 1943 U.S. troops landed on Italy and the tide of the War was
  57. turned.  Germany surrendered on May 7, 1945 and the first nuclear
  58. weapon was dropped by the U.S. on Japan on August 6 and August 9,
  59. ending the Pacific war.  After World War II the United States
  60. enjoyed marginal prosperity, including the re-financing and re-
  61. building of much of western Europe and Japan.  From 1950 to 1953
  62. the United States sent troops to participate in the United
  63. Nations war in Korea.  By 1961 troops were sent to Vietnam and by
  64. 1968 over 500,000 troops were stationed in the country.  July 20,
  65. 1969 the first man, an American, walked on the moon.  On August
  66. 9, 1974, Richard Nixon became the first President to ever resign
  67. from office.  Between 1979 and 1981, 52 American hostages were
  68. held captive by Iranian revolutionary guards.  In November of
  69. 1988, George Bush was elected 41st President of the United
  70. States, succeeding the highly popular eight year term of
  71. President Ronald Reagan.                     @
